The Be-So Series

The Be-So Series (in collaboration with Julian Bozeman) is a multimedia project involving community engagement, video, music, and drawing to create fun and accessible audio and video loops highlighting positive character traits. Adaptable to a variety of settings and participants, each iteration of the project begins by investigating positive character traits through research and open-ended conversation about what people look for in others and what they deem positive about themselves. The artists use the results of these investigations to create audio and video loops.

The series uses common elements to create an entry point for dialogue about positivity. From the casual way the traits are selected to the musical elements of hip-hop and pop, ubiquity and familiarity are key. The artists’ aim to create a final product that inspires the viewer to recognize and discuss positive traits in themselves and in others. The video combines professional and amateur aesthetics created with new and old technologies to generate a timeless feel to the final product. With the classroom engagement iteration, the project was influential in the class’ self-image and their view of their community.

Iterations:

  • Dreamers Welcome - The artists used internet searches and crowdsourcing to determine nine character traits to highlight (Fair, Fun, True, Calm, Cool, Smart, Brave, Sweet, and Proud). The artists used Google Image Search for each trait, gathering familiar and recognizable images (embroidered pillows, clipart, graffiti, etc.). Combining voice recordings with original music, the artists created the simple call-and-response audio component. Using rotoscoped animations, textural animations, and a mid-’90s consumer-grade title maker, the duo created the final video.

  • Brooklyn Arbor Sassafras Class (first graders) - The artists asked students to make a list of positive traits they recognized in themselves, and a song was made from their answers. After listing their positive traits, each student was recorded saying one of their favorite ones. The artists created a song with the recordings, highlighting the positive traits the students saw in themselves.

This project was made possible with a Career Opportunity Grant through the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
